Whilst having professionally installed systems (Intruder Alarm systems are always my first recommendation over cctv) is the best Security Tip I can give there are some things you can don to improve your security without having to spend any money on a security system.
No High Fences or Hedges
Whilst we all value our privacy never have high fences or hedges. This can encourage intruders as the can work on a door or window without being seen. Any would be burglar is much less likely to want to break in through a door or window where they may be being watched.

Keep you Property Tidy.
This is an easy and obvious one. A property that looks well cared for will give an immediate first impression of care and attention. Its looks less likely that a door or window has been left unlocked or open. Also locks and any security systems are likely to be well cared for, maintained and fully operational.
Keep Porches Secure
Its temping to leave a porch unlocked for deliveries and post etc. But leaving a Porch unlocked will allow any potential intruder to work on the front door whilst presenting less noise to the outside world and not being overlooked. Its also very bad for identity theft. Your post will probably be available for anyone to walk in and take.
Don’t leave windows open
During the hot summer months many people leave upstairs windows open. This is an especially bad idea above flat roofs or when access can be gained with a wheelie bin etc.
Leaving Lights on
While most people think that external lighting is a deterrent, this only holds true if the area is open and overlooked. Imagine seeing someone just walking around where your light is, suspicious? No not really. But the same area and someone walking around with a torch. Now that is much more likely to get your neighbours attention.
